Chicago’s Alinka is one of them.” – Terry Matthew, 5Magazine Alinka is the kind of DJ other DJs will tell you about. She has a unique power on the decks that comes from lifelong passion and time served, with a focused devotion to her first love – house music. Raised on Chicago’s vibrant house sound with toes dipped into Detroit techno and Europe’s more robust approaches to bass music and the myriad of genres coming from cities like Berlin, London and Paris. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, her early childhood included reluctantly learning the piano, her mother is a pianist, while trying to convince her parents to let her play guitar. Her exposure to Western music was limited, living in a communist country where censorship was common practice. Her family eventually immigrated to Chicago as Jewish refugees in the late 80s as the USSR crumbled. This was her first experience of pop music and she fell head over heels for the chart sounds of Madonna and Janet Jackson. Then came house music from local radio shows where you could frequently hear tracks by Chicago legends like Cajmere and DJ Funk, and shows like Sonic Boom helped expose underground music to the masses. By the late 90s, music had taken over her life. Teenage Alinka immersed herself in the dance music scene spending her summer pulling double shifts at a local pool and moonlighting for rave promoters to build up enough cash to buy decks. After a year of skipping class to relentlessly practice her mixing skills, she began her full time musical pursuit. Working for various club promoters, doing odd jobs passing out flyers and helping with party logistics - anything just to get into clubs underage to see her favorite DJs - all while spending hours digging for tracks at Chicago’s legendary record shop Gramaphone. In 2001 Justin Long recruited her to be the opening resident for his .dotbleep party at Smartbar where she honed her skills for the best part of a decade. In 2012, an impromptu meeting with former Hercules and Love Affair vocalist, Shaun J. Wright, changed her life forever. Their evolving friendship resulted in what would be the first of many musical collaborations. The pair launched their Twirl parties and label, continually strived to inspire each other both musically and spiritually, the result has been an impressive catalog of material for both of them collaboratively and individually on the likes of The Classic Music Company, Jackathon Jams, Crosstown Rebels, Leftroom, and of course Twirl, where as well as their own material the duo have welcomed renowned artists like Spencer Parker, Virginia, LA-4A, Kim Ann Foxman, and Jason Kendig onto the label. The past two years Alinka really hit her stride as a producer with successful releases on world renown labels like Rekids, Crosstown Rebels, Need Want, Permanent Vacation, Harry Romero’s Bambossa Records, He.She.They, and her newly launched second imprint Fantasy Life. She also turned out a standout collection of remixes for labels Me Me Me, Live At Robert Johnson, Lone Romantic, Keinemusik, and Get Physical. Now living in Berlin, Alinka has well and truly found her feet and her inspiration. Alinka has used this base to throw down at parties across Europe from Berghain/Panorama Bar to Circoloco, with regular visits back to the US to play standout clubs like smartbar, and she was a regular at Ukraine's infamous ∄ club in Kyiv. Her evolution continues with 2023 promising a packed schedule of releases, new dance floors to enchant and new material on Twirl and Fantasy Life landing soon.

Ava Irandoost is an award winning filmmaker performance artist music producer and Dj. She grew up in Tehran and left her country at the age of 18 to study architecture at The University of the Arts in Berlin where she received her Masters in Architecture. There Irandoost discovered the multifaceted nature of her character and the desire to tell stories through different manifestations of art expressing herself through video work writing film and music. Irandoost says „ I am interested in creating spaces internal and external spaces of both the characters and the geometrical room. Kaito Winse from Burkina Faso got a great voice, but he also plays many instruments, like flutes, mouth bow and percussion. In 2018 he met Le Jour du Seigneur, a noisepunk-duo from Brussels. After some adventures in the Belgian underground scene drummer Benjamin Chaval and Kaito Winse decided to continue with Nico Gitto on guitar. They create an raw and vile musical universe. Kaito handles the proverbs, his pillars of wisdom, sometimes murmuring other times screaming, while his intense flute solos come straight from the free jazz. With his bariton guitar Nico not only manages to produce all kinds of sounds, he also keeps a nice groove. Benjamin plays his destroying drums with two cut off pieces of broom stick.

Die Technik ist inspiriert von Ohad Naharin und seinen Imaginations- und Bewegungsformen - auch bekannt als Gaga. Wir werden den Körper in seiner Anatomie wahrnehmen, ihn bewusst spüren und erkunden, welcher Tanz in ihm fließt. Das Schöne am Gaga ist, dass die phantasievolle Bewegungsreise dem Ganzen einen bizarren, humorvollen und spielerischen Einfluss gibt, der mega Spaß macht. As a producer, musician, DJ and serial collaborator, Chris Schwarzwälders distinctive style of deep, restrained house is hard to pin down, but you’ll always know it’s him when you hear it. Born in Frankfurt am Main in the 80s, he started playing hiphop in the 90s. While making beats on his MPC2000, he dropped into Offenbach’s Robert Johnson club and fell in love with techno. In 2009, Chris moved to Berlin and started DJing at KaterHolzig, where he found a group of people who thought about music in the same way he did. In contrast to the trends of the late 00s, the sounds being made from this little paradise on Berlin’s river Spree were slower, softer, and more soulful than a lot of what was being played in clubs at the time. It was here that Chris began to cement his reputation as both a solo producer and collaborator, who was capable of bringing his trademark sounds to a whole number of side-projects - many of which have gone on to play to crowds around the globe. He joined the Feathered Sun collective in 2013, together with a group of friends including Acid Pauli, Nu, Jo.Ke and Raz O’Hara. Dreamy, groovy and often improvised, the collective represented a special kind of musical freedom in which a group of producers came together to create something new in a singular, live moment. At the same time, Chris’ friend Mira was making moves of her own, and they started to play back-to-back sets, soundtracking the legendary Monday mornings of KaterHolzig, and now, Kater Blau. The two, who are both residents at Kater Blau, have now been playing together internationally for almost a decade, and have formed a common musical understanding that translates throughout every one of their sets - deep, clubby and melancholic. This partnership has also carried on into the studio, where they have collaborated on numerous hits. His most light-hearted side comes out in collaboration with Iannis Ritter, where the two musicians take on a weirder, more melodic & electro approach than Chris’ other proejcts. If you were to ask him, Chris would describe himself as reserved, logical, rational, melancholic and humorous. Which is why you’d never hear him telling you about the hundreds of nightclubs and festivals he’s played around the globe, or the number of hits he’s had with his productions. If you’re lucky though, Chris might tell you about his favourite synthesizers, and get lost in a conversation all about electronics and sound. Which is exactly where Chris wants to be - lost in electronics and sound.

They might still be standing there if they weren’t kicked out 6 hours later. Honestly, it looks like they didn’t get any smarter since. You still can’t squeeze a leave between them. So things got quickly out of hands and pretty dangerous. Just a second later they destroyed Panne Eichel at Fusion Festival. Sisyphos, Odonien, and KaterBlau... all burning down in flames. Who will teach them reason? You? Since you didn’t, they started to produce their own weapons. First strike at Katermukke. And now? Who’s next? Warbeat? Hmmm... Together they are like an explosion you’re craving to dance Tango with. It’s like a full-scale stress test for the sound system, sensitively pushing the limits on all frequencies. Bold, naughty and rebellious, bouncy basses, crispy breaks, sometimes bluntly brute and then BAM!: Real emotions, like with a heart and all that. And it all makes sense all of a sudden. There’s a joyful exuberance that comes from improvised music, as pure unfiltered creation meets with talent and skill to create accidents and moments freed from the shackles of structure and predictability. That David Koch’s early forays into music were driven by improvisation speaks volumes for the excitement and energy that emanates from him as a producer today. Any artist will happily regale an audience about formative years spent listening to the family record collection, and some may have even started out with instruments, but in David’s case his creative arc began when he first picked up a French horn aged 6. It’s telling that he decided to leave behind the prescribed path of a classical musician and preferred to improvise, even before he picked up the saxophone six years later. Mixing a self-taught process with some professional guidance, David absorbed the heritage of his grandfather’s bebop and jazz records and progressed to joining the Musikhochschule Hanns Eisler conservatory in Berlin. By the time he had finished his studies and was drawn into the seductive world of electronic music production, he had already been defining a musical direction for the vast majority of his life. David’s introduction to the world at large, at least within the confines of underground house and techno, came once he adopted the DeWalta alias. At the same time he launched the Meander label with Fabian Geimer and Jens Körmer, providing an ideal platform for his unique slant on production as well as that of a handful of like-minded artists. Whether producing for Meander or Vakant, Kalk Pets or Cynosure, there’s a unifying quality to David’s music. As with all good artists it’s somewhat indefinable, but it exists somewhere between the rattle and tumble of organic percussion, the vibrant lashings of horns and the warm, rounded electronics. There’s no escaping the strong and determined groove that propels these tracks, but equally the playful energy and maverick charm belie David’s accomplished musical career. Of course the past is influential, but of equal importance is the people you meet along the way and how you let them shape your destiny. In David’s case, as a long time Berlin resident it was inevitable that he would cross paths with an artist like Mike Shannon. After they dived into the studio and producing two EPs together, it was a natural progression for David to entrust his debut album to the plucky Canadian, and so “Wander” was brought to the world via Mike’s Haunt imprint. It’s not easy to portray the complexities of an artist in the confines of a release, but on “Wander” David has achieved a rich and detailed account of who he is as a musician. Each track deals in a head-spinning amount of detail in between the more prominent beats and melodies, from strange analogue FX to fast and loose improvisations. More than anything though, it taps into that aforementioned exuberance which comes from an artist who has grown up making things up his own way. DeWalta is proof, if ever it was needed, that it’s more fun to not compute.

Berlin raised Fidelity Kastrow played her first DJ-gig in 2007 in her hometown Berlin and landed her first international DJ-booking only two months after at Egg London. Two months later, she played at Tresor´s re-opening weekend at their new venue Kraftwerk Berlin, subsequently becoming a regular guest DJ at the iconic techno club. She went on to headline the main rooms of UK superclubs including Canvas, Mass and SeOne when joining London´s itinerant alternative fetish institution Torture Garden as a resident by the end of 2007 and simultaneously picked up a monthly residency at Tresor in 2009. In 2010, she played her debut at Berlin´s best kept secret underground warehouse club, Sisyphos.

Hani Mojtahedy and Andi Toma have been working together on the Hjirok project since 2021. Originally planned as a one-off performance for the House of World Cultures, it developed into a long-term project whose growth has not yet come to an end. With Hjirok, the duo deals with the devastating effects of climate change in the Iranian-Kurdish region and the Iraqi-Kurdish border area. What began as a reflection on the increasing water shortage soon expanded into a panopticon of this region between myth and harsh political reality. Muel are a Graz-based bunch, located somewhere between avant-jazz, experimental folk and noise. The compositions have a tendency to leave an air of mystery, leading the listener down a winding path of trance-like vocal lines and intricate but lulling harmonies. The foundation of the sound is set by the acoustic guitar, which is finger picked much in the style of folk music. This foundation carves a way for the surrounding layers of music which include soaring trumpet melodies, moody electric guitar, earthy synth sounds, experimental drums and a driving double bass line that blend everything together into one unique experience.

Showcasing his command of melody, he is also able to imitate the sound of a trumpet, which can easily be mistaken for the real instrument itself. He is truly a wonder to behold. Sebastian Geist was born in 1980 and grew up in Rostock, Germany. From childhood on, he was interested in nearly all kinds of music. At the age of fifteen/sixteen this became a bit more specific, by hearing a lot of HipHop. But also Jazz, Soul and Funk became more and more important. With about twenty his musical development led away from HipHop to Drum&Bass, Breakbeats and other types of electronic dance music. At this point he started to produce his first Drum&Bass and Downbeat Tracks, which never have seen the light of the day. After a few years he felt bored by the releases in that genre and he became more interested in House, Techno and more minimal stuff. 2007 he moved to Berlin for educational reasons and started to take producing much more seriously. From this moment on he also worked on his production skills to take the sound of his tracks to the next level. That should result in live - performances in different clubs like Panoramabar/Berghain, Watergate or at festivals like the gorgeous Fusion-Festival, Sonne Mond & Sterne Festival or Nation of Gondwana. This „small“ sense of achievement lets him never stop working on improving his skills, to get unusual and fancy tracks out of his studio.

Hauke Freer and Matthias Reiling AKA Session Victim have an unparalleled energy and passion that translates into their renowned live performances and vinyl-only DJ sets. Now in their tenth year of DJing and producing together, they started releasing music as Session Victim when opinion was firmly stacked that vinyl was dying and embracing digital was the only way to sustain a career as a producer. Their success is workable proof that if you’re making music from a foundation of true passion and friendship, you can go against the grain, stick to your principles and still win out. With their own vinyl-only record label Pen & Paper, they release a varied series of EPs from the dancefloor focused to low slung dub. Influenced by Pen & Paper role playing games from the late 70’s and 80’s like ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ in which the players input to the game yield wildly different results, the label is a fitting expression for the impassioned musical output of two self-confessed studio geeks who frequently spend days and nights locked in their Hamburg studio, working on productions, jamming with other artists and playing pinball. Following three well-received LP’s released on Jimpster’s Delusions of Grandeur imprint, 2020 will see Session Victim release their fourth LP, Needledrop on Night Time Stories (sister label of seminal after hours imprint Late Night Tales). ‘Needledrop’ takes significant inspiration from the lavishly textured and subtly layered jazz and soul compositions that found their way into late 90’s trip hop and features a collaboration with USA singer-songwriter Beth Hirsch (who lent her talents Air’s Moon Safari album). The LP provides a suite of both uplifting and easy-listening moments, refined and understated individually, yet cohesively crafted with the organic groove and inarguable credentials we know of Session Victim.

Brit-born duo, The Honey Tapes, are Refuge Worldwide residents and co-founders of the Berlin FLINTA collective, Garage Girls. Based in Berlin, the pair met back in 2020 where they bonded over their mutual love of UKG and house music. Having been fortunate to grace the booths of renowned Berlin clubs such as Watergate, OHM, Tresor and Sisyphos, their visibility in the scene is growing. Although mainly known for their UKG sets, the pair also love to bring UK sounds into their sets through house, tech house and high energy pumpers.

Globalist and out of any schemes, Veeble is a sousaphonic contraption made of brass, gypsy and folk’n’roll skelter bouncy rhythms. An imaginary delight that unites dub echoes in the shacks of Kingston and flashes of pure rock'n'roll, set in a funeral in New Orleans as well as in a gypsy wedding in the Balkan countryside. The guitars, hovering between reggae and manouche jazz, get mixed up with brass riffs over a rhythmic dovetail made of drums and typewriter.

For as long as Ingo can remember, he has dedicated his ears to music, primarily of an electronic nature. At the age of ten, he experimented with his first mixtapes on cassettes, and at 16 he got his first mixing console. The development of digital sound processing and manipulation on the computer drew him back to mixing in 2013. He is discovering ever more sophisticated ways of expressing himself musically and, as "Triankel", allows all music enthusiasts to participate. His music is technically somewhere between a DJ and a live set, as he doesn't simply arrange the tracks in a straightforward order, but combines the elements on all his decks to create a new overall work and allows them to literally fuse together. In this way, he creates a musically varied journey in each of his sets, repeatedly picking up listeners and dancers with gently playful yet dramatically interwoven sounds and carrying them to ecstasy with their eyes closed and a broad smile on their lips.

The 34-year-old belongs to that species of singers who masterfully handles the playful use of clearly ambiguous metaphors in lyrics. The workshop, organized by the Clandestine Publics Research Group, has two parts: In the first we try to understand how dog-whistling works, what can be done against it, and why this is so difficult. In the second part, we turn the question around and ask whether the left can develop their own forms of dog-whistling. Is it possible, is it helpful, and is it effective to use such (dirty) tactics?

Their beats are rooted in old school HipHop loop principles and an authentic love for the analog. In this workshop, we will explore the basics of zine-making together. A zine is a mini-book or a small magazine that can be created by folding and cutting an A4 sheet of paper. These can be easily copied, thus multiplied, and quickly distributed. Above all, zines provide inspiration on how to represent connections in completely new ways, such as through comics or collages in small formats. Participants will have the opportunity to create their first own zine and share their stories and ideas.

Or perhaps the twee kind of punk every rough and dirty macho in a moshpit wants you to forget ever existed. Playing only drums and guitar, the duo from Stuttgart, Germany is both silly, whimsical and vulnerable in a way not a lot of bands are capable of. They make Beat Happening seem like a blast beat spitting death machine. Naive art for hurtful times.
